Download the Sea Turtle pumpkin stencil as a free printable PDF, then tape the pattern to your pumpkin and trace the lines. A sea turtle viewed from above fills this pumpkin stencil, with four swept-back flippers and a dome-shaped shell covered in roughly twenty interlocking polygonal plates, each plate a separate cut piece separated by thin lines of uncut pumpkin. The resulting jack-o-lantern glows through every shell segment individually, mapping out the turtle's scute pattern in orange-framed light. Cut the smallest outer-edge shell plates first since they have the least surrounding support, then work inward toward the larger central scutes. It works as a carving template for a Halloween jack-o'-lantern or a fall porch display. It is rated Advanced. Actual time varies with preparation, pumpkin size and experience. Fine details and narrow supports need careful planning. Follow the cutting and shading key in this designβs PDF.

Frequently asked questions
Can I resize this stencil?βΎ
Yes. The PDF is vector so it scales cleanly. Print the pattern at 100% for a 7 to 10 inch pumpkin, 130% for 11 to 13 inch, or 150% for a giant. Use your printer's "Fit to page" or "Custom scale" setting.
What kind of paper works best?βΎ
Standard 20 lb letter or A4 printer paper is fine. Heavier paper is harder to bend around the pumpkin curve. If your printer supports it, set the quality to 'best' so the lines are crisp.
How long will the carved pumpkin last?βΎ
Usually 5 to 10 days. Coat all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly and store the pumpkin somewhere cool overnight. Avoid direct sun. Battery LED pumpkin lights produce no heat and help it last longer.
Can I sell pumpkins carved with this stencil?βΎ
Yes, the carved pumpkin you make is yours. The license covers personal and small-scale commercial carving (selling carved pumpkins, photographing them, posting on social). You may not resell the PDF file itself.
What if my printer doesn't print the whole stencil?βΎ
Set 'Page scaling' to 'Fit' in the print dialog and uncheck 'Auto-rotate'. If it still cuts off, the design includes 0.25" of safe-area margin so a small crop won't ruin it.
How to carve this stencil
- Scoop walls to 3/4 inch for the many small shell-plate cuts.
- Transfer the full shell grid and all four flipper outlines before removing the stencil paper.
- Cut the smallest peripheral shell plates along the outer edge of the shell first.
- Work row by row inward toward the largest central scute, completing each ring before moving to the next.
- Carve the four flippers after all shell plates are done; their large open areas remove structural support, so save them for last.
- Use a tea candle rather than a string of lights so the heat source is centralized and the individual plate glow reads clearly.
Tools you'll need
For a advanced carve like this you'll want a fine-detail pumpkin saw, spoon / scoop, pin transfer tool, and small gouge if the pattern includes shading. Here's the kit we reach for, but start with whatever you already own.

AdvancedSteady Sheldon Pumpkin Stencil
A gentle box turtle strolls across the pumpkin, its domed shell divided into raised seams and its legs dotted with rounded scale spots. The whole design is skin-shave work with no pierced holes; you strip the skin inside each shell panel and body section while leaving the seam lines dark and raised. Vary your shaving depth slightly between panels to give the shell dimension, and save the tiny scale dots for last.
IntermediateSmiling Sea Turtle
A smiling sea turtle paddles across the pumpkin, its patterned shell divided into glowing plates while thin ribbons of skin stay in place to draw the head, flippers, and shell segments. This is a shading-style design carved on a continuous wall, so you shave away the skin rather than piercing holes, letting the whole turtle glow softly. Shave in thin layers and test with a light often until the flippers and shell panels shine evenly.
IntermediateSheldon the Turtle Pumpkin Stencil
A friendly turtle ambling along in profile, its domed shell divided into a mosaic of eleven plates, with a lifted head, dot eye, and stubby legs. This is a shading design: you shave the skin inside each shape so the pale flesh shows, leaving thin dark rind lines between the shell plates. Work plate by plate and keep the dividing ridges at least a knife-width wide.
Beginner-friendlyTurtle Pumpkin Stencil
A side-view turtle with a segmented shell is the subject of this easy pumpkin stencil: the domed carapace is divided into roughly twelve polygonal scute cutouts separated by thin pumpkin-skin ridges, the head extends forward on a curved neck with a small circular eye detail, and four stubby legs and a short tail complete the silhouette. When lit, the shell glows as a mosaic of separate panels. Cut the smaller head and eye section before tackling the large shell scutes, since the head area has less surrounding support once the shell pieces are removed.
