   Pick a big pumpkin and print your pattern

   Choose a large pumpkin with one wide, flat side for the flag. Print a stars-and-stripes stencil sized to fit that panel, leaving a good margin from the ribs and stem. Tape it on smoothly, darting the paper so it lies flat over the curve. Trace or poke through all the lines with a pushpin or transfer tool so you have a full dotted map before you cut.

   Open the pumpkin and thin the flag wall

   Have an adult cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact. Scoop the pulp and scrape the inside of the flag area until the wall is about one inch thick. A thinner wall makes stars and stripes far easier to cut and lets more light through. Keep the rest of the wall thicker for strength.

   Punch the field of stars

   Use a small star-shaped linoleum punch or clay cutter and press each star straight through the thinned wall. Line them up on your rows so the canton looks even and repeated. Leave a little pumpkin between each star so the field does not collapse into one big hole. Push gently and twist, then poke the plug out from inside.

   Cut the stripes with bridges

   Following your traced wavy lines, cut through the stripes that should glow brightest with a fine saw blade. Leave narrow bridges of skin between the open stripes so the panel stays connected and does not sag. Cut the flagpole as a thin channel and keep its edges clean. Work slowly on the curves so the waves stay smooth.

   Peel the shadow stripes for a mid glow

   For the stripes you want darker, skip the full cutout and instead shave off just the outer skin with a shallow gouge. These peeled bands will glow a soft dim orange, giving contrast against the bright cutout stripes. This is the alternating deep and shallow trick that makes the flag readable. Test as you go by holding a light behind the panel.

   Light it and stage it

   Drop in one or two battery LED lights, never a candle, since the many small openings and thin wall can scorch. Set it near your front door on a porch step where the flag faces walk-up traffic. Mums and fall foliage frame it nicely for early season display. Snap your photo at dusk when the glow reads strongest against the dark.
