Step back and check that the shapes are balanced before you cut anything.

   Using a lino cutter or the tip of a spoon, shave off just the orange skin inside the arch, leaving the pale flesh exposed. Keep the peeled area even so it glows a consistent soft orange. Peel a narrow band along the arch outline too if you want that bright rim look from the photo. Do not cut through here, this layer is meant to stay closed and only glow faintly.

   Cut the cross all the way through

   With a small pumpkin saw, cut out the cross in the center of the arch. Saw slowly with gentle pressure and let the blade do the work rather than forcing it. Because the cross has thin arms, take your time at the corners so the flesh does not crack. Push the piece out from behind once every line is fully cut.

   Cut the moon and clean the edges

   Cut the small circular moon last, since it is a separate opening and easiest to add once the main work is done. Trim any ragged inside edges with a paring knife so light passes cleanly. Wipe the peeled area with a paper towel to remove loose bits. Rub a little petroleum jelly on cut edges to slow drying.

   Light it and set it out

   Drop a battery LED or a string of warm LEDs inside and skip open flame, since the peeled thin areas can scorch and dry fast. Set the pumpkin on a porch step where the surroundings are dark so the glow stands out. Check that the light sits low enough to fill both the cross and the moon. Snap your photo at dusk for the best contrast.
