Awareness Ribbon Pumpkin With Carved Heart Accents

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

   Plan and transfer your layout

Pencil the ribbon, the words Hope, Strength, and Together, and the vines onto paper first so your spacing is even. Tape the pattern to the pumpkin and poke through the outlines with a pin, or trace over with a transfer tool. Keep the ribbon centered on the flattest face and set the words to one side. Working out the baseline on paper stops the letters from drifting up or down on the curved surface.

2. 2

Open the lid and clean out the inside

An adult should cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, so the stem stays intact for looks. Scoop the pulp and scrape the inside wall behind the ribbon down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall makes the peeled areas glow more evenly. Save some seeds for roasting later.

3. 3

   Peel the ribbon shape

Using a shaving or scoop tool, remove only the orange skin inside the ribbon outline to reveal the pale layer underneath. Keep the depth consistent so the whole ribbon glows the same. Follow the loop and the two tails, leaving a thin line of untouched skin where the ribbon folds over itself so the crossover still reads. Go slow and let the shape stay smooth.

4. 4

   Scratch the words and vines

Etch the letters and the heart-tipped vines even shallower than the ribbon, just scuffing off the top skin. A small detail tool or a lino gouge works well for thin strokes. Keep the vine lines connected so they curl as one continuous shape. The lighter touch here makes the words a softer glow than the bright ribbon.

5. 5

   Refine the contrast

Step back and check that the ribbon is clearly deeper and brighter than the lettering. Deepen any spots on the ribbon that look patchy, and clean up letter edges with the tip of your tool. Wipe away shavings with a damp cloth. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, since the thin peeled areas can scorch. Test in a dark room and reposition the light so it fills the ribbon evenly. Place the pumpkin on a runner or memory table and take your photo with the room lights low. Refresh it in the fridge overnight if you want it to last for an event.
