Leave narrow bridges of skin between claw grooves so the thin shapes hold their form and do not crack. Cut any deeper openings gently and last of all.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a battery LED light, warm white looks closest to the cozy glow in the image, and set the pumpkin at eye level on the porch. Rotate it until the face is centered and the fur shadows fall evenly. Mist the cut edges with water and refrigerate overnight when not on display to keep the shading crisp. Shoot your photo in low light so the glowing face pops against the dark background.
