Pick and prep the pumpkin

Choose a tall, smooth pumpkin with a clean front panel and a nice curved stem like the one shown. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and let it dry fully so paint grips well. A slightly matte, unwashed skin actually holds acrylic better than a waxy shine. Set it on a towel so it does not roll while you work.

Sketch the hound lightly

Use a washable marker or soft pencil to rough in the head shape, the two long draped ears, and the centered white blaze. Keep the eyes large and set them a little low on the face, since the mournful look comes almost entirely from them. Step back often to check that both ears hang evenly. Redraw as needed before any paint goes down.

Block in the big masses

Start with the tan and dark-brown areas using a medium flat brush, painting the ears, the patches around the eyes, and the crown of the head. Work in thin coats and let each one dry before adding the next so colors stay crisp. Leave the blaze and muzzle area unpainted for now. Two or three light coats read better than one heavy one.

Build the white blaze and muzzle

Layer soft white or cream up the center stripe, the muzzle, and the chest, building opacity gradually so it looks smooth and slightly rounded. Let it dry, then add a second pass where you want the brightest highlights. Keep the edges where white meets brown a little soft rather than hard. This is what gives the face its gentle, velvety look.

Paint the eyes and nose last

Add the large brown irises, then the black pupils and the dark nose and mouth line. Once everything is dry, place tiny white highlight dots in each eye to bring the gaze to life. Finally, dry-brush a small amount of dark brown along the ear edges with a nearly dry brush for a soft, furry finish. Let the pumpkin cure fully before moving it.

Seal and stage the photo

Once dry, brush on a thin matte sealer to protect the acrylic from smudges and humidity. Set the pumpkin on a counter or shelf with soft daylight or a warm lamp nearby, as in the kitchen scene shown. Angle the face slightly toward the light so the eyes catch a highlight. Snap your photo from eye level for the most soulful expression.
