The Golden Spokes Bicycle Pumpkin Carving Idea

Pick a wide, flat-faced pumpkin

A bicycle is a long horizontal shape, so choose a pumpkin with a broad, mostly flat front panel. Wipe it clean and dry, then check that the carving area has no deep ribs or soft spots running through where the wheels will sit. Set it on a towel at a comfortable table height. A stable surface makes the fine frame work far easier.

Open the back and hollow it out

Cut a lid or a round access hole in the back, not the top, so the stem stays intact as shown. Scoop the guts and scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall lets light pass through the peeled areas evenly. Save some pulp off to the side if you want to test lighting later.

Trace the bicycle icon

Tape your home-printed bike stencil flat against the front and poke the outlines with a pin or transfer tool. Mark the two wheel rings, the frame tubes, the seat, the handlebars, and the pedal. Take your time here since accurate spacing is what makes it read as a bike from the sidewalk. Peel the paper and connect any faint dots with a washable marker.

Shade the frame and handlebars

Using a lino or ribbon tool, shave the skin off the frame tubes, seat post, handlebars, and pedal down to the pale flesh without piercing through. Keep the strokes even so the glow stays consistent along every tube. These shaved lines will read as a soft golden bike rather than harsh open cuts. Leave the frame triangles inside the shape as untouched dark skin.

Cut the wheel rings last

Now carve the two tires as thin open rings, working slowly with a fine saw and leaving the wheel centers as standing skin. Cutting these full openings last keeps the pumpkin rigid while you do the delicate frame work. Angle the blade slightly outward so the rings catch more light. Clean the edges from the inside so they glow crisp and bright.

Light it and place it

Drop in a battery LED, never a candle, and set it toward the front wall so the peeled frame and cut wheels light evenly. Check it in a dark room and touch up any thin spots that stay too dark. Set it on a porch bench or step near the door as a marker for the cyclist's house. A dab of petroleum jelly on cut edges slows drying for a few extra days.
