Luna the Harvest Moon Cat

Framed by a huge harvest moon, a black cat sits with its tail curled around its feet and amber eyes catching the light on this porch pumpkin. The moon disc is shaved pale so the dark cat pops against it, an easy silhouette effect with big payoff. Peel the moon circle first, then add the cat with black acrylic once the surface dries. Set it on a step where headlights sweep past for extra drama.

Our tips for carving a similar design

The core trick here is contrast: a pale shaved moon disc that glows warm, with a solid dark cat sitting in front of it. Since this is a concept image, think of it as a plan you could follow. You peel the skin off the moon circle so it lights up, keep the cat area dark, and let the shape read as a clean silhouette from the sidewalk.

From pumpkin to porch

  1. Prep and open the pumpkin

Pick a tall pumpkin with a smooth, flat-ish face for the moon. Have an adult cut a lid or a back door and scoop the insides until the front wall is about an inch thick. A thinner wall makes the peeled moon glow better. Dry the inside with paper towels so paint will stick later.

  2. Transfer the moon and cat

Tape your stencil to the front and poke dots along the moon circle and the cat outline with a pin or awl. Space the dots close together on the curves of the tail and ears so the shape stays readable. Peel off the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker. Double check the cat sits centered inside the moon before you cut anything.

  3. Shave the moon so it glows

Use a ribbon or lino-style shaving tool to peel just the orange skin off the moon circle, staying outside the cat outline. Work down to the pale flesh for an even amber tone, going slow near the cat edge. Keep the depth consistent so the moon lights up evenly instead of blotchy. Leave the cat area and the outer skin untouched for now.

  4. Paint the cat silhouette

Let the surface dry fully, then fill the cat shape with black acrylic paint. Use a small brush along the tail curl, ears, and whiskers so the outline stays sharp. Two thin coats look better than one thick one and will not drip. Keep the paint inside your marker line so the silhouette reads clean against the glowing moon.

  5. Cut the eyes last

For amber eyes that catch the light, cut two small almond shapes all the way through the wall where the cat's eyes sit. Do this after painting so you do not smear wet paint into the openings. Keep the cuts tiny and leave a solid bridge of shell between them so the face stays strong. This is the only full cutout, so take your time.

  6. Light it and stage the shot

Drop in a battery LED, warm white or amber, and set it toward the front wall. Place the pumpkin on a step or porch ledge at dusk. Because the moon is shaved thin, it will glow soft while the painted cat stays a solid shadow. Snap your photo before the pumpkin dries out over the next few days.

Gather your supplies

Check things off as you get ready.

Work on a stable surface, keep your free hand out of the cutting path, and have an adult handle sharp tools.

Three levels of light

  • Leave intact

The outer orange skin and the entire painted cat body, tail, and ears stay dark.

  • Peel & shade

The large moon disc behind the cat is shaved to pale flesh for a soft amber glow.

  • Cut through

Only the two small eyes are cut through the wall for bright pinpoints of light.

Learn the carving basics

Before you start cutting

Will the moon glow if I only shave the skin instead of cutting it out?

Yes, that is the whole point of this design. Peeling down to the pale flesh over a thinned wall lets light pass through as a warm dim glow rather than a harsh open hole. Keep the depth even and the wall about an inch thick for the best effect.

Should I carve the cat or paint it?

Paint is the easier and stronger choice for this look. A fully carved black cat would remove most of the shape and leave little to hold the ears and tail together. Painting keeps the silhouette solid and dark while letting the moon behind it do the glowing.

How do I keep the thin curled tail from looking rough?

Since the tail is painted, not cut, structure is not a worry, but a clean edge is. Transfer the tail curve with closely spaced dots, then paint just inside your line with a small brush. Steady, short strokes along the curve give you a smooth silhouette.

Your take belongs here, too.
