   Leave the two side bolts slightly less peeled, or skip peeling them, so they stay a touch darker than the face and stand out. Small restraint here keeps the monster looking carved rather than gouged.

   Cut the eyes and mouth through last

   Save the full cutouts for the end so the face panel stays sturdy while you work. Pierce the two round eyes cleanly, keeping them the same size and evenly spaced. Cut the slim mouth bar as one straight slot, using gentle pressure so it does not tear wide. Push all waste inward and out through the back opening rather than prying it forward.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck inside, warm white or amber, and never a candle. The peeled panel should glow soft while the eyes and mouth pop brighter. If any spot looks dim, reach in and shave the inside wall a little thinner behind it. Shoot at dusk on a step or porch so the ambient light still shows the pumpkin's shape.
