   Alternate etched and untouched stripes across the wing and tail to mimic real blue jay markings. Peel every other band down to thin skin so it glows, and leave the band beside it at full thickness so it stays dark. Keep the untouched stripes connected to the surrounding skin so nothing pops loose. This alternating pattern is what sells the bird as a jay.

   Peel the maple leaf canopy

   Shave the maple leaves to a medium depth so they glow at a soft mid level, dimmer than the open background but brighter than the bird. Keep leaf veins as slightly raised lines by not peeling them as deep. Vary the depth slightly from leaf to leaf so the canopy has natural depth. Leave narrow skin bridges between overlapping leaves so the shapes stay crisp.

   Cut the brightest gaps last

   Save any full cutouts for the very end, once all the delicate shading is locked in. Cut through only the small gaps between leaves and around the bird where you want the strongest light. Angle the blade slightly outward so the openings catch more glow. Cutting these big holes last keeps the pumpkin wall strong while you do the fine work.

   Light it and take the photo

   Drop in two battery LED lights rather than candles so the whole wraparound scene lights evenly and safely, with no heat near the thin walls. Warm flicker LEDs give that candlelit look without the fire risk. Rub a little petroleum jelly on cut edges to slow drying. Photograph it at dusk on a porch step so the glow reads against the darker background.
