Work from the center of each opening outward toward your traced lines so you do not stress the thin bridges. Push each cut piece out gently from the inside. Save the largest openings for last since the pumpkin gets weaker as more material comes out.

   Peel a few areas for soft shading

   For depth, use a lino or ribbon gouge to scrape away only the orange skin on select shapes, like the eye ring or an inner wing panel, without cutting all the way through. These peeled spots glow a dim orange between the dark untouched skin and the bright cutouts. Keep the peeled areas shallow and even so the light spreads smoothly. Clean up any ragged edges with a small detail blade.

   Light it and take your photo

   Set a battery LED puck or string light inside rather than a candle, which keeps the thin bridges from scorching and is safer indoors. Dab petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the lines crisp. Turn off the room lights and place the pumpkin on a plain surface to photograph the glow. Shoot slightly off to the side so the feather detail reads clearly.
