   Drill starter holes and saw each shape

   Poke or drill a small starter hole inside the bird's body, then inside each leaf shape. Start with the smaller leaves and save the large bird body cutout for last, since removing the biggest opening early weakens the wall.

   Run your saw or a small knife back over each opening to smooth ragged edges so the glow reads as crisp shapes. If you want the bird to feel rounder, lightly shave the skin just around the body cutout to create a faint dim halo. Wipe away pulp bits from inside the cuts so light passes cleanly. Step back and check that the branch still visually connects the whole scene.

   Set one or two battery LED lights inside, warm white or amber for that lantern feel. Real candles are a fire risk and can scorch the thin bridges, so skip them. Place the pumpkin on a bench or step at dusk and shoot slightly off to the side so the glowing shapes stand out. A dab of petroleum jelly on the cut edges helps the pumpkin stay fresh for a few extra days.
