   Do not carve the black parts of the collie's coat at all. The untouched orange skin will stay dark against the lit areas and define the ears, the mask, and the shadows between fur clumps. Where the dark coat meets the tan, use short peeled flicks that taper into the untouched skin to suggest individual hairs. This contrast between skin and peel is what makes the portrait pop.

   Cut the brightest details last

   Now cut fully through the blaze, the tongue, the eye catchlights, and the thin gaps of open mouth so they blaze the brightest. Clean up ragged edges from the inside with a small loop tool.
