   Pick a round pumpkin and plan the trio

   Choose a tall, round pumpkin with a smooth flat area on the front. Sketch three candy corn triangles in pencil or with a marker, wide at the bottom and pointed at the top. Space them across the front and tilt each one a little differently so they look casually scattered. Keep the outer two slightly smaller than the center one for balance.

   Have an adult cut a lid or a wide access hole in the back or bottom, angling the cut inward so the piece rests without falling in. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then scrape the inside of the front wall until it is about an inch thick. A thinner wall carves more easily and lets more light through. Save some pulp for compost if you like.

   Mark the stripe bridges before you cut

   On each candy corn shape, draw a horizontal band across the middle where the stripe will sit. This band stays attached as a bridge, so shade it in your sketch to remind yourself not to cut through it. Keep each bridge at least a half inch wide so it stays sturdy. Double check all three before making any cuts.

   Cut the open sections

   Using a small serrated carving saw, cut out the top and bottom portions of each candy corn, cutting fully through the wall. Leave the marked middle band uncut on every shape. Work slowly and let the saw do the work rather than forcing it. Push the freed pieces out from the inside so the edges stay clean.

   Shave the stripe bridges thin

   From inside the pumpkin, use a loop or ribbon tool to shave the back of each middle band down until it is thin and translucent. Test as you go by holding a light behind it. You want the bands to glow a soft muted orange, dimmer than the fully open sections but still lit. Stop before you break through so the stripe stays intact.

   Light it and set it out

   Drop in a warm white or amber LED puck light for that candy-orange color, never a real candle. Set the pumpkin on a porch bench or step and check the glow from a few feet back. If a band looks too dark, shave it a touch thinner from inside. Snap your photo at dusk when the contrast between the bright cutouts and the dim stripes shows best.
