Pick a tall pumpkin and transfer the design

Choose a smooth, tall pumpkin with a flat-ish front face so the three balls sit close together without curving out of view. Tape your printed pattern over the front and poke through the outlines with a pin or a transfer tool. Go slowly around the soccer pentagons and the baseball stitches so every narrow bridge is marked. Step back and confirm the overlaps look balanced before you remove the paper.

Open the lid and clean the wall

Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact for looks. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall makes the cutouts easier and lets more light through the peeled areas. An adult should handle all the cutting tools throughout.

Carve the soccer ball bridges first

Start at the top with the soccer ball's pentagon outlines and seam lines, since those skinny strips crack most easily if you save them for last. Use a small detail saw and take short, gentle strokes, cutting the fill areas around each line so the lines stay attached on both ends. Leave the stitching and seam strips as raised skin, not open cuts. Working these delicate bridges while the pumpkin is still full and sturdy keeps them from tearing.

Add the baseball and basketball details

Move to the baseball at left and carve out the fill so the curved rows of stitches remain as thin bridges of skin. Cut the big background openings last

Once all the fine lines are safely carved, remove the largest background panels between and around the balls. Saving these wide cutouts for last keeps the pumpkin rigid while you do the fussy work. Cut with steady pressure and let the waste pieces fall inward, then push them out from behind. Clean up any ragged edges with a paring knife.

Light it and take your photo

Drop in a battery LED puck or string, never a candle, so the thin bridges do not scorch and the light stays even. Warm white LEDs give that classic orange glow you see in the concept image.
