Feather the edge where thin belly meets darker back so the transition looks smooth, not like a hard line. Hold the pumpkin up to a light now and then to judge how bright each spot reads.

   Cut the outline gaps last

   Save all full cuts for the end, when the surface work is done. Use a small saw to cut the narrow open channels that separate the body from the background, the gap under the belly, and the spaces between the legs and around the tail. Keep small skin bridges wherever a thin leg or whisker could snap, and cut the biggest openings last so the panel stays rigid. Work with a gentle sawing motion and let the blade do the work.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop a battery LED light inside, never a real candle, since the thin belly would scorch under a flame. An LED also stays cool against those delicate spots for hours. Set the pumpkin at eye level on a step, dim the surrounding lights, and shoot slightly off to one side to catch the layered glow. If a section looks dull, scrape it a touch thinner from the inside.
