   Start with the shaded detail while the wall is still solid and strong. Use a lino or ribbon tool to peel away just the outer skin along the whale's belly grooves and fin, leaving those lines as dim glowing accents. Keep the eye and mouth as thin unpeeled ridges so they read as dark features against the bright body. Working these details first means you carve them on a sturdy surface.

   Shade the curling waves

   Skin-peel the scrollwork wave curls along the bottom band so they glow softly without weakening the lower wall. Leave narrow bridges of skin between each curl so the swirls stay defined and the pumpkin keeps its strength. You can peel a little deeper on the wave crests you want brighter. This is the part that adds vintage nautical charm, so take your time on the curl shapes.

   Cut the whale body last

   Now make the full cutouts with a fine saw, starting with the small spout dots and the tail tips so they release cleanly while the surrounding pumpkin is firm. Cut the main whale body opening after the small points are done. Support the flesh with your free hand as each piece drops inward. Gently push cutout scraps out from the inside to avoid chipping the edges.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck or string inside and skip candles, since the etched areas and thin bridges are safer with cool light. Look through from the front and add a second small light low in the cavity if the wave band looks dim. Wipe the cut edges and coat them with a little petroleum jelly to slow drying. Shoot your photo at dusk on the porch so the warm glow reads against the darker background.
