Skipper the Leaping Dolphin Pumpkin Carving Idea

Pick and prep the pumpkin

Choose a large, round pumpkin with a smooth, flat-facing side that fits the whole dolphin and wave scene. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact for display. Scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick with a sturdy scoop. A thinner wall carves cleanly and lets more light through the finished cuts.

Transfer the pattern

Tape your dolphin and wave stencil flat against the pumpkin, snipping the edges so it hugs the curve. Score the outline with a pin tool or stylus, poking closely spaced dots along every line. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a washable marker if the dotted path is hard to read. Take your time on the curved fins and the wave crests, since these guide all your later cuts.

Shade the dolphin body

Use a lino or ribbon tool to skin-peel the surface of the dolphin, removing only the orange rind to expose the lighter flesh underneath. This gives the body a soft mid glow that separates it from the dark border. Keep the peel shallow and even so the shape stays readable. Leave a crisp unpeeled line around the eye and mouth to hold those details.

Cut the open water

With a thin-bladed saw, cut through the shell in the spaces between the waves and around the leaping dolphin, since these openings will be the brightest part of the scene. Start with the smaller interior gaps and hold the saw straight up and down for clean edges. Leave narrow ribs of skin between adjacent wave shapes so the surface stays strong. Save the largest openings for last so the pumpkin keeps its structure while you work.

Clean up and test the glow

Push loose pieces out from the inside with gentle finger pressure so you do not crack the edges. Trim any ragged spots with a small detail knife and re-peel any shaded areas that look uneven. Set an LED tea light or a small battery puck inside and check the balance in a dark room. Adjust by peeling a little more skin where the body looks too dark.

Stage the final photo

Rub a thin coat of petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the shape sharp for a day or two. Place the pumpkin on a porch step at about eye level so the warm glow greets people as they pass. Add a lantern or a pot of mums nearby for a cozy coastal-meets-autumn scene. Shoot in low light with the LED as your only source for the best contrast.
