Georgia State Map

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

   Pick and prep the pumpkin

Choose a large pumpkin with a broad, fairly flat face and few deep ribs so the outline stays readable. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, which keeps the face uninterrupted and makes it easy to seat an LED light later. Scoop the inside thoroughly and thin the carving wall on the face to about one inch so your blade moves cleanly. A steady, even wall thickness gives you sharper edges on the finished shape.

2. 2

   Transfer the Georgia outline

Print the state outline sized to fit the flat face with room to spare on all sides. Tape it in place, centering it slightly above the pumpkin's midline so the stepped lower right corner has extra material beneath it. Poke closely spaced dots along the entire border with a pin or a poking tool, following the straight northern edge and the ragged eastern river line carefully. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker if the pattern is hard to read.

3. 3

Score the outline before cutting through

Before making any full cuts, trace the whole border with shallow scoring so you can check the shape reads correctly. Step back and confirm the straight north edge and the stepped Florida corner look right. Fix any wobbles now while it is only surface deep. This dry run keeps your real cuts confident and continuous.

4. 4

   Cut the state opening

With an adult handling the saw, cut along your scored line using gentle, steady strokes and letting the tool do the work. Start on the interior corners of the stepped southern edge and the notches along the river border, then work the long straight and curved runs last. Support the piece with your free hand as it loosens and ease it out toward you so the edges stay clean. Trim any ragged spots from the inside for a smooth glowing rim.

5. 5

Clean the edges and add light

Angle the inside edge of the cutout slightly outward so more light escapes and the state glows brightly. Wipe the rim smooth and dab the cut edges with petroleum jelly to slow drying and browning. Place a warm white LED light or a small LED puck inside, never a candle, and settle it so the whole shape lights evenly. Add a second LED if the upper corners look dim.

6. 6

   Stage and photograph

Set the pumpkin on a table at dusk when the ambient light still shows the intact skin around the bright cutout. Angle the face toward the camera so the ragged eastern border and stepped corner read clearly. A little surface moisture catches highlights and makes the orange pop against the dark evening. Shoot from slightly above the midline to match how the state sits on the face.
