Tennessee Long State Map Pumpkin

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Pick a round pumpkin and open the back

Choose a wide, evenly rounded pumpkin with a flat area on the front for your map. Cut a lid or a hole in the back rather than the top so the front stays clean and the wide shape keeps its support. Scoop the inside until the front wall is about an inch thick. A thinner wall cuts more easily and lets the state glow brighter.

2. 2

   Transfer the state outline

Print a Tennessee outline sized to stretch nearly edge to edge across the front, then tape it flat and poke the outline with a pushpin or transfer tool. Space the dots closer together along the jagged eastern edge so those steps stay crisp. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker if it helps. Double check the long top line is close to level before you cut.

3. 3

   Cut from the center outward

Start your saw cut in the middle of the shape and work toward one narrow end, then return to the center and cut toward the other end. This keeps the long, thin silhouette from sagging or snapping before the cut is finished. Use a small serrated pumpkin saw and let the blade do the work with gentle pressure. An adult should handle all sharp tools.

4. 4

   Shape the jagged eastern border

Slow down on the right side where the mountain boundary steps up and down. Make short, controlled cuts and turn the pumpkin rather than twisting your wrist. Clean each notch with a fresh angle so the ridge-and-valley pattern stays sharp. Take your time here since these steps are what make the shape read as Tennessee.

5. 5

Clean the edges and light it

Trace the inside edges with your saw or a small knife to remove any ragged pulp and bevel the cut slightly outward so more light escapes. Drop in a battery LED, warm white or amber, and skip open flames near a wide cutout. Set the pumpkin so the glow fills the whole state evenly. Adjust the light position until the center is not brighter than the ends.

6. 6

   Stage and photograph

Place the pumpkin somewhere warm looking, like a mantel or hearth, with the cutout facing your camera. Shoot in a dim room so the amber glow reads strongly against the untouched skin. A second soft light off to the side keeps the pumpkin's texture visible. Wipe the cut edges dry beforehand to prevent glare.
