From pumpkin to porch

   Pick a tall pumpkin and open the back

   Choose a pumpkin with a smooth, wide face and few ridges where the head will sit. Cut a lid or a back access hole so you can reach in and thin the wall. Scrape the inside of the carving area down to about one inch thick so light passes evenly. A thinner wall makes the peeled and etched fur lines glow much better.

   Trace the profile

   Print a side-on shepherd head, ears pricked forward, and tape your stencil flat against the face. Poke a dotted outline through the paper with a pin or a fine poker tool, following the muzzle, ears, and neck ruff. Remove the paper and connect the dots lightly with a washable marker. Double check the ear tips and muzzle look balanced before you carve anything.

   Peel the head to one shallow depth

   Using a ribbon or loop tool, skin off just the orange outer layer inside the whole head outline. Aim for one even shallow depth so the entire head glows the same dim orange. Keep the edge of your outline crisp so the profile stays sharp against the dark skin around it. Take your time and keep both hands behind the blade.

   Carve the fur with a v-tool

   Switch to a small v-gouge and cut short strokes that follow the direction the coat grows, sweeping back from the muzzle and down the neck. Vary your pressure so some lines are fine and others are bolder. This layering is what sells the shepherd's dense coat. Work in the same direction as the fur rather than crosshatching randomly.

   Deepen the jaw, ruff, and eye

   Go deeper with the v-tool along the jaw line and the thick neck ruff so those areas catch the most light and pop forward. Carve the eye and the inner ear a touch deeper as well to draw attention to the face. Leave the outer ear edges and the top of the head shallower so they stay softer. Step back often to check the balance of light and dark.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck inside, never a candle, and dim the room to judge the glow. Add a second small light if the lower neck looks dark. This design also looks handsome in plain daylight, so shoot it both lit and unlit on a bench or porch step. Mist the cut edges and refrigerate overnight to slow drying.
