Champ the Noble Pit Bull

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Pick your reference and transfer the map

Choose a side-lit profile photo of your dog so light and shadow are already clearly separated. Simplify it into three or four tones: dark skin, dim peel, bright peel, and full cutout. Print it to fit your pumpkin's flattest face and tape it in place. Poke or trace the outline of the ears, jaw, eye, and nose so you have guides before any cutting begins.

2. 2

   Open and clean the pumpkin

Have an adult cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, which keeps the front face smooth and unbroken for the portrait. Scoop the insides and scrape the inner wall behind the face down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall lets the peeled areas glow evenly. Blot the surface dry so your pattern stays put.

3. 3

   Score the outlines first

Using a fine detail knife or a lino-style gouge, lightly score along the transferred lines of the ears, muzzle, eye, and jaw. These score lines act as stop cuts that keep your shading from bleeding past its borders. Keep the blade shallow and let the outline define each shape. Do this before removing any skin so every region stays crisp.

4. 4

   Shade with skin-deep peeling

Switch to a shading loop or ribbon tool and peel the skin away in the mid-tone areas of the face, the upper cheek and the chest. Peel deepest where you want the brightest glow and leave a thin skin veil where you want a softer, dimmer light. Leave the eye patch, the nose, and the darkest shadow folds completely untouched so they read as dark contrast. Work gradually and hold the pumpkin up to a light now and then to check your tones.

5. 5

   Cut the brightest accents last

Only after the shading is finished should you cut fully through the wall, and only in the small hottest highlights such as a glint near the muzzle or the brightest edge of the chest. Keep these openings small so the wall stays strong and the portrait keeps its painted look. Cut slowly with a fine blade and support the surrounding skin with your free hand. Save these big-light cuts for the end so the face does not weaken while you shade.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Drop in a warm-white LED puck or a battery tea light rather than a flame, since the thin peeled wall can scorch. Test in a dark room and touch up any tone that reads too flat by peeling a little deeper. Set the pumpkin on the step at dusk for the best glow. A side angle photo shows off the shaded muzzle and the bright cheek.
