Keep them evenly spaced and resist widening them, since tiny openings glow like freckles of light. Do the eye highlight and the smallest mouth details at this stage too. Working small to large keeps the pumpkin strong so nothing tears.

   Cut the fin rays with bridges

   Cut the narrow slots of the spiny dorsal fin, the tail, and the lower fins one ray at a time. Leave a thin bar of skin between each cut so the fin reads as separate spines instead of one gap. Use a fine sawing blade and let the tool do the work rather than forcing it. If a bridge feels flimsy, leave it a little wider for support.

   Open the body and mouth last

   Now remove the larger sections: the open mouth, the eye ring, and any big body windows in your pattern. Support each piece with a finger from behind as you free it so it does not crack inward. Cutting these big openings last means the wall stayed rigid for all the fine work. Gently clean up ragged edges with the blade tip.

   Light it and stage the porch

   Drop in a battery LED, never a candle, so the delicate fins do not scorch and the light stays steady all evening. Set the bass at eye level by the front door with a pot of mums nearby for a lake-house feel. Snap your photo at dusk when the glow is strongest against the dark. Mist the cut edges with water and refrigerate overnight to keep the fins crisp.
