Test with your LED often, since a little scraping changes the glow a lot.

   Build the fur with layered etching

   Etch short directional strokes for the fur, cutting deeper near the face and shallower toward the outer edges. This gradient is what makes the coat look soft rather than flat. Keep the outermost fur mostly untouched skin so it frames the portrait in dark. Rotate the pumpkin as you go to keep your strokes flowing in the natural direction of the fur.

   Add whiskers and eye highlights last

   Practice a few whisker strokes on the back of the pumpkin first, then make each real whisker a single confident pull with a sharp blade. Cut the small eye catchlights and any true openings now, at the very end, so the wall stays strong while you do the delicate work. Keep whisker cuts thin and shallow so they glow as fine lines without weakening the shell. Clean up stray crumbs with a soft brush.

   Light it and photograph on the step

   Drop in a bright warm LED puck, candles are not safe for a thin etched face like this. Set the pumpkin on a porch step at dusk and check the glow from a few feet back, adding a second LED if the paws look dim. Rub a little petroleum jelly on cut edges to slow drying. Snap your photo while the light is low and the amber-to-white grading shows best.
