Use thin black lines for the nostrils, the nose ridge, and the flat mouth line. Small details carry a lot of the personality, so work slowly and keep a paper towel handy to fix slips.

   Seal and stage

   Once everything is bone dry, brush on a clear matte acrylic sealer to protect the paint from smudges and light moisture. Set the pumpkin on a windowsill or counter where daylight shows off the contrast. If you want a glow at night, tuck a battery LED behind or beside it rather than carving into the painted face.
