   Pick a tall pumpkin and prep the shell

   Choose a large, evenly shaped pumpkin with a smooth front panel for the scene. Cut a wide lid from the bottom or back so you can hollow it without touching the carving face. Scrape the inside wall behind the scene down to about one inch so light passes through evenly. A thinner wall makes the shaved areas glow far better.

   Transfer the scene and map your depths

   Tape your stencil flat and poke the outlines through with a transfer tool, marking the moon, tree, branches, headstones, and grass line. Before cutting, decide the three light levels in your head: sky brightest, mid ground dimmer, tree and stones darkest. Lightly shade the tree and stones with a pencil so you never carve them away by mistake. This is a shading project, so most of the shell stays in place.

   Shave the sky and moon first

   Use a wide ribbon gouge to skin the sky and moon areas down to a thin, even layer, working from the center outward. Keep the moon the thinnest and most uniform so it reads as a bright glowing disk. Stop often and hold the shell to a light to check for even thickness. Leave the branch shapes standing proud so they stay dark against the glow.

   Define the tree bark and branches

   Switch to a small V-gouge to carve the bark texture into the raised trunk and limbs. Follow the natural flow of each branch with short, tapering strokes so the wood looks gnarled. Keep the thinnest twigs attached to thicker branches so nothing snaps off. Since the twigs stay as raised skin rather than cutouts, they hold up well even at this fine scale.

   Carve the headstones and grass

   Shave the mid ground and rolling hills to a medium depth so they glow softly behind the stones. Leave the cross-topped headstone and the leaning marker raised and dark, then add faint chisel lines for cracks and weathering. Cut the grassy foreground with short upward nicks for a ragged silhouette. Save any true cut-through openings for last so the shell stays strong while you work.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a bright LED puck light, ideally one with a cool-to-warm option, and set it low so the glow rises through the moon. Never use a candle, since the thin shaved areas can scorch and the fine bark texture is delicate. Shoot in a dark room so the glow is the only light source. Mist the cut surface with water if it dries out before your photo.
