Its a Girl Announcement Pumpkin

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Pick a tall pumpkin and open the back

Choose a pumpkin with a smooth, fairly flat front panel so the lettering reads cleanly. Cut a lid or, better, a round access hole in the back rather than the top, which keeps the front face unbroken. Scoop the insides and thin the front carving wall to about one inch so your blade passes through easily. A thinner wall makes fine script far more forgiving.

2. 2

   Transfer the lettering carefully

Print or draw your 'it's a girl' layout with the small script on top and the big bold word centered. Tape the pattern flat against the front, cutting small relief slits so it hugs the curve without wrinkling. Poke the outline with a pin tool or transfer with a dull point, paying special attention to the enclosed loop of the 'g' and the tiny apostrophe. Mark the connecting bridges you plan to leave so you do not forget them mid cut.

3. 3

   Carve the small script first

Start with the delicate 'it's a' at the top while the pumpkin is still strong and rigid. Use a fine detail saw and make slow, steady strokes, letting the tool do the work instead of forcing it. Keep the apostrophe attached by leaving a slightly thicker bridge of skin than feels necessary, since thin punctuation snaps easily. An adult should handle all blade work.

4. 4

   Open the bold 'girl'

Move to the large center word, which has the most open area and gives the brightest glow. Cut each letter as its own shape and remove the pieces gently so you do not crack neighboring strokes. For the letter 'g', carve its outer body but leave the inner counter island connected by two small bridges top and bottom until the very end. Work from the center of each opening outward toward the edges.

5. 5

Cut the fragile pieces and heart last

Now free the apostrophe and the enclosed counter of the 'g', trimming their bridges only once everything else is stable. Cut the small heart below the word last, since larger low openings weaken the pumpkin's structure. Take your time here and support the surrounding skin with your free hand. If a bridge feels shaky, leave a little extra material rather than risk a tear.

6. 6

Light it and take your photo

Drop in a battery LED puck or a string of warm LED lights rather than a flame, especially for an indoor announcement shot. Test the glow in a dark room and shave the back of any letter that reads too dim. Set the pumpkin on a neutral runner near a window for soft evening light. Snap your reveal photo once the interior glow is even and the words read clearly.
