   Save the true openings for the end, when the pumpkin is strongest: the gaps around the hat brim, the mouth line, the eyes, and any narrow slivers that should shine brightest. Cut with a gentle sawing motion and support the surrounding shell with your free hand. Push the cut pieces inward and out to avoid cracking the thin bridges. If a small piece feels fragile, leave a hidden tab to anchor it.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck inside, warm white for that classic amber glow, and never a real candle near the thin walls. Rotate the light until the cheeks and shamrock glow softly while the cutouts pop bright. Rub a little petroleum jelly on cut edges to slow drying and keep the detail sharp. Shoot at dusk on a step or porch for the best contrast between glow and shadow.
