   Pick and prep the pumpkin

   Choose a rounded pumpkin with a smooth, flat front panel so the wide saucer disc sits evenly. Cut a lid from the bottom instead of the top so you can set the pumpkin down over an LED later, and this also protects the nice curved stem. Scrape the inside of the front wall until it is about one inch thick, which makes the fine ring cuts far easier. An even wall glows more consistently once lit.

   Tape your UFO stencil flat against the front and poke through the key outlines with a pin or a transfer tool. Mark the dome arc, the alien's oval face, and each ring line of the disc as separate closed shapes. Take your time keeping the two long disc rings parallel, since uneven spacing is the easiest way to lose the saucer illusion. Step back and check the whole layout before any blade touches the skin.

   Peel the alien and dome glass

   Use a shallow gouge or lino tool to skin off just the top layer of skin inside the dome, leaving a dim orange glow that suggests glass. Keep the little alien body slightly darker by peeling less there so its shape stands apart from the dome behind it. Leave the two tiny eye dots as untouched dark skin. This mid-tone layer is what sells the domed cockpit before you cut anything all the way through.

   Cut the fine ring and dome lines

   An adult should handle the detail saw here. Cut the thin dome outline and the disc ring slots as narrow channels, working slowly and leaving a bridge of rind between each ring so the strips do not collapse. Cut the shortest segments first and save the longest sweeping lines for later. Support the pumpkin wall with your free hand near, not behind, the blade.

   Open the small accents last

   Finish with the little dot lights along the disc and any small star or detail cutouts around the saucer. Piercing these tiny openings last means the surrounding rind is not stressed while you make the bigger cuts. Clear each hole gently with a poke tool so you do not tear the edges. If one small piece breaks free, a dab of toothpick can pin it back in place.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a warm white LED puck inside and lower the pumpkin over it, then dim the room to check balance. The dome should glow soft while the ring slots and dot lights read bright and crisp. Nudge the light toward the front wall if the fine lines look faint. Shoot from straight on so both disc rings stay level in the photo.
