Transfer the portrait and plan your values

Since this is a concept design, start by choosing a real pumpkin with a broad, smooth front panel that matches the flat portrait area shown. Tape a llama stencil on and poke through the outlines with a pin or transfer tool, marking the ears, eye, muzzle, and the main fleece layers. Shade in pencil which zones will be bright, mid, and dark so you have a map before any tool touches the skin. Keep the design centered and slightly above the middle so light pools upward into the face.

Open the pumpkin from the back or bottom

Cut an access hole in the back or the base, not the top, so the front panel stays uninterrupted for the portrait. Use a keyhole saw and angle the cut inward so the lid or plug does not fall in. Scoop the inside wall behind the face down to about an inch thick so light passes through the peeled areas easily. A thinner wall means a brighter, more even glow across the fleece.

Outline the llama with a shallow score

Trace the outer edge of the ears, head, and neck with a fine detail knife, cutting only about a quarter inch deep. This score separates the animal from the background without removing skin yet. Follow the eye and muzzle lines the same way so you have clean boundaries to shade against. Take your time on the ear tips and jaw, since these thin shapes define the whole silhouette.

Peel the bright zones for the face and chest

Switch to a loop or ribbon tool and shave the skin off the face, muzzle, and upper chest so the pale flesh shows through. Go deeper where you want the brightest highlights, like the bridge of the nose and the front of the chest, and lift the tool for a lighter touch in mid tone spots. Test against a light now and then to check your values. Leave a thin dark rim around the eye so it stays expressive.

Carve the fleece in layered strokes

Work the shaggy neck with short, curved gouge strokes that overlap like shingles, peeling each tuft a little at its lower edge to catch light. Round the top of every tuft with the loop tool so the wool looks soft instead of carved with hard lines. Keep the background strokes very shallow and dark to push the fleece forward. Vary the depth across the neck so the fleece has natural movement rather than a flat texture.

Light it and photograph

Set a warm flicker LED puck inside, never a candle, and rest it low so light rises into the face and fleece. Look at the pumpkin in a dark room and touch up any zones that read too dark by peeling them a little thinner. Mist the cut surfaces with water and refrigerate the pumpkin when not on display to slow drying. Shoot your photo at dusk on a step or porch so the glow stands out against the shadows.
