The muzzle, brow, and beard tips are your brightest peels.

   With a shallow gouge, remove only the waxy top skin across the broad face and cheeks to establish a base mid-tone. Work in the direction the fur would grow, short strokes down the beard and out across the muzzle. Keep pressure light on this first pass so you can always go deeper later. Step back often and check the likeness before committing.

   Build the fur with hatched strokes

   Switch to a narrower V-gouge and add hatched lines to suggest shaggy hair on the beard, ears, and neck. Vary the length and spacing so it reads as fur rather than a pattern. Scrape the highlight areas thinner to lighten them, and leave the darkest shadows barely touched. Patience here is what separates a flat etch from a face that has depth.

   Sharpen the eyes and horns

   The eyes carry the whole portrait, so define them last and carefully. Leave a small untouched dot of skin for the dark pupil and peel a thin crescent around it for the catchlight. Deepen the grooves along the horn ridges so they read as ridged keratin, and darken the shadow where each horn meets the skull. These small contrasts pull the goat forward from the pumpkin.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop a battery LED puck inside and test in a dark room. Because this is a shaded portrait with no big cutouts, the glow will be soft and even, so a warm-white LED reads best. If any area looks too dark, scrape a little more skin to lift it. Shoot at dusk on a bench or step, angled slightly toward the light, to catch the fur texture.
