   Move to the smaller openings next: the torch flame, the hat, and the tight gaps in the robe folds. Work from the center of the figure outward so the surrounding shell stays strong. Save the widest robe cutout for last, since that large opening weakens the panel most. Keep short bridges where two cutouts nearly meet so thin ribbons of pumpkin do not snap.

   Carve the ground wisps and clean edges

   Cut the low ground curls at the base as full openings so the figure looks like it is standing in glowing mist. Gently bevel the inside edge of each cutout at a slight angle so more light escapes. Trim any fuzzy edges with your knife tip and test-fit an LED. Touch up any spot that reads muddy from a few feet away.

   Light it and photograph at dusk

   Drop in a bright battery LED, never a candle, so the tall thin staff and robe glow evenly without heat weakening the shell. Set the pumpkin on a porch or gravel path and shoot during the sunset window when the sky still has color. Rotate it until the staff line reads crisp and the robe fills with warm light. A little rim light from the fading sky makes the silhouette pop.
