   Cut the background to light

   Now cut fully through the oval area on both sides of the witch, removing those pieces so the background becomes bright openings. Work from the middle of each open zone outward toward your scored border to avoid stressing the figure. Leave the witch silhouette, her hat, and the cat as solid, uncut rind. Support the loose background chunks with your free hand as they release so nothing tears.

   The broom handle is the thinnest part, so carve it only after the big openings are done. Keep the handle a little wider than it looks in the picture so it stays strong, and leave tiny bridges of rind where it meets the witch's hand and the ground. If a section feels too delicate, peel the skin there instead of cutting through to keep it intact. Cut the fine cat outline gently with a fresh, sharp blade.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a battery LED puck or string, never a candle, so the thin details stay safe from heat. Set the pumpkin against a dim background and let the oval glow do the work. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the light crisp. Shoot the photo in low room light so the silhouette reads sharp and clean.
