   Tape a rhino head stencil to the front and poke the main outlines with a pin, or lightly score them with a knife. Focus first on the largest masses: the horn, the muzzle, the brow, the cupped ears, and the jaw. Use a loop tool to shave away the background around the head so the whole face sits slightly proud of the pumpkin. Work shallow at this stage since you can always remove more later.

   Build depth from front horn to background

   Establish your depth order early: keep the front horn and brow highest, set the eye socket and cheek a step back, and push the ears and background deepest. Remove flesh in thin passes with the loop tool, checking the shape from the side often. Leave the tip of the horn well supported and rounded rather than fragile and pointed. Stop and hold a light behind the pumpkin now and then to see how the planes read.

   Refine skin folds, wrinkles, and the eye

   Switch to a small ribbon or detail loop tool for the wrinkled hide, the folds around the muzzle, and the creases at the ear base. Carve the deep skin folds a bit thinner so they glow brighter and pop against the surrounding hide. Give the eye a rounded socket and leave a small raised dome for the eyeball so it catches light and looks alive. Take your time and keep every cut shallow, since a slip here is hard to undo.

   Skin-peel for midtones and glow

   Use a gouge or the flat of a loop tool to peel just the outer skin off broad areas like the cheek and the sunlit side of the horn, leaving the flesh underneath. These peeled zones will glow a soft mid orange, filling the space between your dark untouched shapes and your brightest thinned folds. Keep the very darkest shadows, like inside the ears and the far background, as untouched skin. This three-level contrast is what gives the head its sculptural roundness.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop a battery LED puck or two inside through the back hole, never a candle, and aim for a warm flicker-free glow. Set the pumpkin near a lantern or place a second light off to one side so it rakes across the wrinkles and deepens the texture. Mist the surface lightly and shoot at dusk for the best contrast. If a fold looks flat, shave it a touch thinner and check again.
