See-No-Evil Monkey Emoji Pumpkin Carving Idea

Transfer the pattern and plan your negative space

Pick a large round pumpkin with a broad, flat front so the emoji reads clearly. Tape your home-printed stencil on and poke the outlines with a pin or transfer tool, marking every line that separates the dark hands and face from the bright cutouts. Before cutting, shade the areas that will be fully pierced with a marker so you never confuse a keep zone with a cut zone. The hands, the smiling face, and the two dots for the nose all stay as solid pumpkin.

Open the pumpkin and thin the front wall

Have an adult cut a lid from the bottom rather than the top so the stem stays intact and the pumpkin sits flat. Scoop the insides thoroughly and scrape the inner front wall down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall makes the piercing cuts cleaner and lets more light push through the open areas. Work over newspaper and keep the pulp for seeds.

Carve the mouth rectangle first

Start with the small open mouth at the bottom center using a fine saw blade, keeping the corners crisp. This anchors the whole composition and gives you a reference point for spacing the hands above it. Cut slowly and let the blade do the work rather than forcing it. Push the piece out gently from the inside once the cut is complete.

Cut the small detail openings

Next pierce the two little nose dots and the thin curved lines that suggest the closed, smiling eyes behind the fingers. These small cuts are easier while the wall is still mostly intact. Keep the strips between the fingers of each hand at least a quarter inch wide so they do not tear. Take your time here, since these tiny details give the face its friendly expression.

Open the large side windows last

Now cut the big bright areas that surround each hand, saving these for last because they remove the most material and weaken the wall. Leave at least half an inch of uncut skin around the outer edges of the pumpkin so the front does not sag or crack. Support the shape with your free hand as you finish each long cut. When both sides are open, the dark mitten hands will appear to float in the glow.

Light it and photograph

Drop in one or two battery LED lights, never a candle, since the deep openings and thin bridges can scorch. Warm white or orange LEDs give that cozy glow you see in the reference. Set the pumpkin at eye level in a dim room and shoot from straight on so the symmetry of the two hands reads clearly. Mist the cut edges with water if you want them to stay fresh for photos.
