Winking Tongue-Out Face Pumpkin

A winking tongue-out emoji face fills the circular carved area, one eye closed to a curved wink and the other open with a swirl pupil, with a wide U-shaped tongue hanging below a smiling mouth. The face circle, open eye, and tongue shape are all pierced through in this pumpkin carving idea, while the wink arc and the curving smile line remain as uncut ridges within the glow. Carve the swirl inside the open eye before removing the larger face circle around it, so the spiral keeps its crisp definition while supported by a firm wall.

Our tips for carving a similar design

The core trick here is carving the swirl pupil first while the pumpkin wall is still firm, then removing the big face circle around it so the spiral keeps crisp edges. Everything works as a large glowing circle with a few key shapes pierced through, while the wink arc and the smile line stay as uncut ridges that read as dark lines inside the light. Plan your cuts small to large so the delicate details stay strong until the end.

From pumpkin to porch

  1. Prep the pumpkin and pick a flat face

Choose a tall pumpkin with a broad, even front so the round design has room to sit. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact and the shell keeps its strength. Scoop the inside until the front wall is about one inch thick, scraping the carving area a little thinner so light passes through easily. A smooth, consistent wall makes the swirl and thin ridges much easier to control.

  2. Transfer the winking face

Tape your stencil flat against the front, snipping the paper edges so it hugs the curve without wrinkling. Poke through the outlines with a pin or a transfer wheel: the big face circle, the open eye with its swirl, the closed wink arc, the smile line, and the U-shaped tongue. Peel the paper and connect the dots with a washable marker so you can see every shape clearly. Double check that the wink arc and smile line are marked as ridges to keep, not cuts.

  3. Carve the swirl pupil first

Start with the small spiral inside the open eye while the surrounding wall is still solid and supportive. Use a fine detail saw or a craft knife and take slow, shallow strokes, letting the tool do the work. Cut the swirl as a clean pierced shape so it will glow, keeping a steady hand around the tight curve. Doing this detail before the larger openings means the wall braces the blade and the spiral stays sharp.

  4. Pierce the open eye, tongue, and mouth

Next cut fully through the open eye shape, then the U-shaped tongue hanging below, then the smiling mouth opening. Leave the curving smile line and the closed wink arc as uncut skin so they stay dark against the glow. Work each shape as its own clean cutout and support the pumpkin with your free hand well away from the blade. Adults should handle all the sharp cutting.

  5. Remove the big face circle last

Save the large ring opening around the face for the end, since it is the biggest cut and weakens the shell most. Cut the outer circle in short sections, pausing to let the piece flex rather than snap. Ease the ring out gently once it is fully released. Clean up all the edges with a small knife so every curve looks smooth.

  6. Light it and photograph

Drop in a bright LED puck or string light, never a candle, and set the intensity so the swirl and tongue read clearly. Take your photo at dusk from straight on so the round face fills the frame. If any edge looks dull, shave the inside wall a touch thinner behind it to boost the glow. Coat cut edges with a little petroleum jelly to slow drying and keep the grin looking fresh.

Work on a stable surface, keep your free hand out of the cutting path, and have an adult handle sharp tools.

Three levels of light

  • Leave intact

The uncut skin across the pumpkin plus the wink arc and the curving smile line, which stay dark to define the face.

  • Peel & shade

Optional: lightly skin-peel just inside the face ring for a soft halo of dim orange around the glowing circle.

  • Cut through

The face circle, the open eye with its swirl, and the U-shaped tongue, all pierced through for the brightest light.

Learn the carving basics

Before you start cutting

How do I keep the swirl pupil from breaking?

Carve the swirl before you remove the large face circle, so the full thickness of the wall braces the blade. Use a fine detail saw and shallow, patient strokes rather than forcing the tool. Keeping the surrounding shell intact until the swirl is finished is what protects the crisp spiral.

The wink arc and smile line are not cut out, so how do they show?

Those lines stay as uncut skin, which reads dark against the bright openings around them. You simply carve everything except those ridges, leaving them raised and solid. From a few feet away the dark arc and smile pop cleanly inside the glow.

Since this is a concept image, can a real pumpkin hold the thin tongue and ridges?

Yes, as long as you keep the wall about an inch thick and leave the wink arc and smile line as solid uncut skin bridges. Make the tongue a single sturdy U rather than a fragile sliver. Cutting the big face circle last keeps the shell strong while you finish the fine work.

Your take belongs here, too.
