Prep the pumpkin and cut an access hole

Pick a tall pumpkin with a smooth, flat face for the hand design. Cut a wide opening in the bottom rather than the top so the pumpkin sits flat and you can slip an LED light in from below. Scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick so light passes through evenly. A thinner wall makes both peeling and cutting much easier.

Transfer your stencil and mark your bridges

Tape your two-hands-forming-a-heart pattern to the face and poke the outlines with a pin or transfer tool. Before you cut anything, draw in the connection bridges yourself: small tabs of rind that link each finger segment to the neighboring segment or to the uncut border. Mark the tiny center heart where the thumbs nearly meet as a shape to leave dark. Step back and confirm every bony island has at least one bridge holding it in place.

Open the large background panels first

Using a fine carving saw, cut out the big glowing areas around the outside of the hands, working from the center of each panel toward the edges. Cutting these large openings first keeps the pumpkin strong while you handle the delicate work later. Support the rind with your free hand as pieces release so they drop inward gently. Keep the blade moving slowly and let the saw teeth do the work instead of forcing it.

Cut the fine gaps between finger segments

Switch to your smallest saw or a detail blade for the narrow slots that separate each finger bone. Take these one at a time and stop short wherever a bridge is marked so the segments stay connected. These thin cuts are where the design can crack, so go slow and reposition your grip often. If a bridge feels weak, leave it a touch wider rather than risk losing a finger.

Peel the center heart for a soft glow

For the small heart negative space at the middle, skin-peel the surface instead of cutting all the way through. Shave off just the orange rind to expose the lighter flesh so that spot glows a dim, warm orange against the brighter background. This gives the heart a gentle focal point without weakening the fragile thumb tips around it. Check the depth by holding the pumpkin up to a light.

Light it and take your photo

Set a battery LED or a string of warm LEDs inside, never a candle, since the thin bridges and finger islands can scorch. Place the pumpkin on a dark surface and dim the room so the silhouette reads clearly. Rotate the light until the bony fingers stand out as crisp dark shapes. Snap your photo slightly off to one side to catch the depth of the peeled center heart.
