Prep the pumpkin and pattern

Pick a medium round pumpkin with a smooth, flat front panel for the silhouette. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact, then scoop the inside until the front wall is about one inch thick. A thinner wall is much easier to pierce cleanly. Tape your stegosaurus stencil flat on the front and poke the outlines with a pin or transfer tool.

Cut the small body dots first

Start with the little oval and circular dots along the body, since they are the smallest and safest openings. Use a fine detail saw or a craft blade and push straight in, letting each dot pop free. Working these first keeps the surrounding rind firm and gives you clean edges. Take your time so the dots stay evenly spaced.

Carve the back plates tip to base

Move to the row of spiked plates and cut each one from the pointed tip down toward the base. Leave a thin connecting band of rind at the bottom of the plates so they do not drop out before you are finished. This band acts as a temporary bridge and keeps the fragile tips supported. Cut slowly along each plate edge with light, repeated passes.

Outline the body, legs, and tail

Now cut the main silhouette outline that separates the dinosaur shape from the background. Do the four short blocky legs and the tapering tail with steady, controlled strokes. Keep the legs a bit chunky rather than needle thin so they hold their shape. Cut the largest open sections last, once all the detail work around them is done.

Release the plates and clean up

With the rest of the design carved, gently slice through the thin connecting band so the plate openings glow freely. Trim any ragged edges from the inside with your blade at a slight angle to help light escape. Wipe away loose pulp and dry the cut edges with a paper towel. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cuts to slow drying.

Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED or a small string of LEDs inside so the plates and body dots read as separate bright points. Never use a candle near thin cut sections. Place the pumpkin on a flat surface and dim the room to check that each dot glows evenly. Adjust the light position until the silhouette reads clearly, then snap your photo.
