Doing these first means the surrounding pumpkin stays rigid and the spots hold their shape.

   Carve the body outline last

   Now cut the full dinosaur silhouette, working the tight curves of the neck and tail slowly with a fine saw. Keep the saw straight up and down for crisp edges. Cut the largest openings, like the space under the belly and around the legs, near the end so the wall does not flex while you still have detail work to do. Support each freed piece with your hand as it releases.

   Clean up and test

   Trim any ragged edges with a small detail blade and gently bevel the inside of the spots so more light passes through. Wipe away loose pulp with a damp cloth. Drop in an LED light, never a candle, and check that every spot and the silhouette read clearly from a few feet away. Widen any spot that looks dim.

   Set the scene and photograph

   Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the lines sharp. Place the pumpkin on a porch step or table at dusk for the warmest glow. Position the LED slightly behind the belly so the spots and neck light evenly. Snap your photo while there is still soft light in the sky for that cozy look.
