Support the rind on both sides with your free hand as you go.

   Cut the body and legs

   Move to the thick, sturdy body and cut its outline next, working the belly, back, and neck. Save the narrow leg tips and small front arms for last so the surrounding rind stays firm while you carve the wider areas. Angle the blade slightly outward so the opening flares toward the inside, which lets more light through. Gently push the silhouette piece inward and out once every edge is freed.

   Run your saw back along any rough spots so the outline is crisp and the running pose reads clearly from a distance. Wipe away pulp and pat the cut edges dry.    Stage it at eye level and photograph

   Place the finished pumpkin on a dark step or table at viewer eye level so the horizontal running pose looks its most dramatic. A dark surface hides reflections and makes the glowing cutout pop. Shoot at dusk when there is still a little ambient light on the rind but the cutout reads bright. Take a few frames from straight on to capture the full sweep of the tail.
