Pick a smooth panel and transfer the design

Choose the flattest, cleanest face of the pumpkin so the tall stork has room from top to bottom. Tape your stencil in place and poke or trace the full outline, including the long beak, the folded wing edge, and both thin legs. Take your time on the legs and beak since those are the parts most likely to drift if the paper shifts. You do not need to gut this pumpkin fully, but scooping the top helps it keep longer.

Score the outline with a craft knife

With a sharp craft knife, cut a shallow line right along the entire stork outline, only about an eighth of an inch deep. This scored border stops your peeling tool from skidding into the background later. Go slowly around the beak tip and down the narrow legs, keeping the blade nearly vertical. Adults should handle all knife work.

Peel the body to expose the glow

Switch to a ribbon or lino-style peeling tool and shave the skin off the inside of the stork shape, working from the middle out toward your scored lines. Aim for an even depth so the whole bird lights up the same warm tone. Keep the surface smooth rather than gouging deep, since you want steady color, not holes. Stop cleanly at the outline you scored earlier.

Carve the thin legs and beak with shallow passes

The legs and beak are the fragile parts, so peel them in slow, light strokes rather than one deep cut. Leave the flesh under them thick so the narrow strips do not tear or sag. If a leg feels weak, keep it a touch wider than your stencil for strength. Peel the beak last so you are not leaning on it while working the body.

Add the eye and wing detail

For the round eye, either leave a small dot of dark skin untouched inside the peeled head or peel a hair deeper for contrast. Trace the folded wing line with the knife tip and shave just that groove a little deeper to suggest the feather edge. These small touches give the poster-like look without any full openings. Wipe away shavings with a dry cloth to check your contrast.

Seal it and stage it in daylight

Rub the peeled areas with a thin coat of petroleum jelly or a food-safe preservative to slow drying and keep the pale color bright. Set the pumpkin on a bench, step, or garden table where morning or afternoon light hits the face. Since nothing is cut through, no LED is required, though a small light nearby at dusk still looks nice. Snap your photo while the peeled flesh is freshest.
