Work slowly and remove more later if you want it brighter, since you cannot put skin back.

   Scrape the sleeve to a medium depth and the knuckles a touch brighter so the hand pops forward. This contrast is what makes the gesture read clearly from the curb. Keep narrow bridges of skin between the fingers so the shapes do not blur into one blob.

   Cut the brightest accents last

   Only after all the shading is done, cut fully through on the few smallest highlight lines, like the sharp edge of the fingertip or a crisp collar line. Cutting these openings last keeps the front wall strong while you do the heavy scraping. Angle the blade slightly outward so the light flares as it exits. Clear the little plugs from inside so nothing blocks the glow.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a battery LED puck, warm white for that classic orange tone, and never a candle since the thin scraped areas can scorch. Set the pumpkin at eye level on a stone ledge or step for the night shot. Shoot in near dark from straight on so the layered brightness levels all show. If a shaded area looks too dim, scrape it a hair deeper and check again.
