Choose the pumpkin and clean the wall

Pick a tall, smooth pumpkin with a flat front panel so the face reads clearly. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, which keeps the display face uninterrupted and makes the LED easy to swap. Scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch so your tools pass through cleanly. A thinner, even wall makes the fine curls and collar lines far easier to control.

Transfer and study your stencil

Tape the printed portrait tightly to the front and poke the outlines with a pin tool, following the caption's advice to trace the curly hair and sideburns carefully. Dot along each curl from the center outward so you can see the spiral shape before any blade touches the pumpkin. Light it and photograph in the dark

Dim the room fully so only the pumpkin is lit, which makes the layered details stand out against the dark rind. Shoot slightly off to one side to add depth to the crown points.
