   Work the five triangles one at a time so the wall never gets weak all at once. For each pointed triangle, cut from the top down toward the tip with a thin saw blade, then meet each cut exactly at the point instead of running past it. Stopping right at the tip keeps the corners crisp and prevents the skin from tearing. Do the largest center triangle last.

   Clean up the edges

   Trim any ragged edges with a paring knife or your saw tip so every corner is sharp. Scrape a slight bevel on the inside back of each opening to let more light escape. Wipe away loose bits and check each shape from the front. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED or a string of LED lights inside, never a candle, and place the pumpkin at eye level on the steps. Test the glow after dark and rotate the light until the eyes and crown read evenly. If a triangle looks dim, thin its inside wall a little more. Snap your photo straight on so the crown and face stay symmetrical.
