Transfer the full geometric layout

Tape the template to the pumpkin and trace every single outline with a stylus, then connect all the dots with a marker. Go through the entire design and mark every connecting strip with a second color or a dot at each end. The structural web of this pattern means every strip carries load, so none can be removed accidentally.

Hollow the pumpkin to an even thickness

Cut the lid from the base and scoop the cavity to a very consistent inch-thick wall across the entire carving area. On a geometric design, any thick or thin patch in the wall creates a visible inconsistency in the glow because thicker areas transmit less light than thinner ones. Scrape gently with a spoon to level any obvious variations.

Cut the innermost ring first

Begin with the triangles and diamonds in the innermost concentric ring, which has the most surrounding intact rind to support it. Use a fine-tooth detail saw for all these small openings, cutting each shape individually and cleaning the edges before moving to the next. Cut all shapes in the innermost ring before beginning the second.

Progress ring by ring outward

Complete each concentric ring fully before starting the next. This ring-by-ring sequence keeps the structural load distributed evenly and makes it easy to test stability before committing to the next layer. Press on the completed rings after each one is fully cut to confirm the rind web is still rigid.

Cut the outermost ring last

The outer ring reduces the final structural margin the most. Work at your slowest pace here, with the blade barely moving near every narrow connecting strip. Use a linoleum cutter to finish the last millimetres beside each bridge rather than risking the saw at full speed.

Light with maximum output

A high-output LED is essential for a geometric pattern: it illuminates every small triangle and diamond fully, including those in the outermost ring that are farthest from the light source. View the finished lantern in a dark room and give your eyes a moment to adjust to the remarkable complexity of the glowing rind web.
