Doing these landmarks first gives you reference points for the larger peeled areas.

   Peel the beak in one even tone

   Use a ribbon or gouge tool to scrape away just the outer skin across the large beak, exposing the pale flesh underneath for a dim glow. Work in smooth, even strokes and keep the depth consistent so the surface lights up uniformly. Stop at your scored borders and around the dark tip you left in place. Wipe away pulp as you go to check the tone.

   Shade the chest and branch

   Peel the toucan's chest and the branch the same way, keeping them at a matching mid depth so they glow like the beak. Leave the body, wing, and background skin fully untouched so those areas stay dark and frame the bird. If you want subtle depth, scrape the chest a hair thinner than the beak for a slightly brighter patch. Step back often to make sure your dark and light shapes still read as a toucan.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a battery LED light, warm white looks best for that toasty orange, and never use a candle. Because the walls are mostly intact, the glow will be soft and even rather than blazing through cutouts. Set the pumpkin on a table indoors, since this etched design also looks great with no light at all. Snap your photo in a dim room to show off the two peeled tones.
