   Etch the feather groups

   Switch to a shallow loop or ribbon tool and scrape the skin off the feathers, starting at the shoulder and working down. Keep the strokes following the direction each feather points, and vary your pressure to get lighter and darker tones. This is slow work, so rest your hand often and keep the blade shallow.

   For the branch, leaves, and any small gaps you want brightest, cut most of the way through or fully through the wall. Save these deeper cuts for last so the panel stays strong while you etch. Keep thin leaf stems attached to the branch by leaving small skin bridges rather than isolating them completely. The deeper branch gives the glowing bird something solid to perch on.

   Light it and photograph in daylight

   Drop in a battery LED puck, never a candle, since the thin etched wall scorches easily. This design shows off best in daytime, so set it on the porch where sunlight catches the feather texture and the raised beak. At dusk the LED adds a warm inner glow through the peeled areas. Mist it and bag it in the fridge overnight to keep the fine etching from drying out.
