Take your time on curves and let the tool do the work rather than forcing it.

   Peel the coat in feathered strokes

   Switch to a ribbon or loop tool and skin-peel the body, removing only the outer skin to expose the pale flesh beneath. Work in short overlapping strokes that follow the fur arrows, lighter on the belly and heavier along the back for depth. Leave a few thin unpeeled lines inside the coat as texture so it does not look flat. Keep the peeled layer thin and even for a soft, uniform glow.

   Shade the face and features

   Peel the muzzle and cheeks a little deeper so they read as bright, then leave the nose, eye dots, and the shadow under the chin as untouched dark skin. Feather the beard and eyebrows with light gouge strokes so the face keeps its scruffy Westie charm. Do not pierce the eyes or nose; the contrast of dark skin against peeled coat is what defines them. Step back often to check the expression.

   Light it and photograph

   Place a battery LED behind or beside the pumpkin, or set it under a lamp, since this design has no cutouts to shine through. Daylight or warm indoor light shows the layered coat best. Brush away loose flecks and rub a thin coat of petroleum jelly on the peeled areas to slow drying. Snap your photo the same day, as surface carves fade fastest.
