This free Sitting Black Cat pumpkin stencil is a printable PDF pattern you can print at home, tape to your pumpkin, and trace. A cartoon-style black cat sits centered in a large oval cutout on this pumpkin stencil, its round body, pointy ears, and grinning face left as pumpkin skin while the oval background glows with light. The curling spiral tail sweeps to the right inside the oval, and thin whisker lines extend from each cheek. When carving, cut the large background oval first to establish the shape, then carefully remove the small eye and smile details, keeping the curled tail's narrow inner spiral intact by working slowly around its center loop. Use it as a carving template for your Halloween jack-o'-lantern. It is rated Beginner-friendly. Estimated time: 60-90 minutes. Actual time varies with preparation, pumpkin size and experience. Larger shapes and shorter cuts. An adult should handle sharp carving tools.

Frequently asked questions
Can I resize this stencil?βΎ
Yes. The PDF is vector so it scales cleanly. Print the pattern at 100% for a 7 to 10 inch pumpkin, 130% for 11 to 13 inch, or 150% for a giant. Use your printer's "Fit to page" or "Custom scale" setting.
What kind of paper works best?βΎ
Standard 20 lb letter or A4 printer paper is fine. Heavier paper is harder to bend around the pumpkin curve. If your printer supports it, set the quality to 'best' so the lines are crisp.
How long will the carved pumpkin last?βΎ
Usually 5 to 10 days. Coat all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly and store the pumpkin somewhere cool overnight. Avoid direct sun. Battery LED pumpkin lights produce no heat and help it last longer.
Can I sell pumpkins carved with this stencil?βΎ
Yes, the carved pumpkin you make is yours. The license covers personal and small-scale commercial carving (selling carved pumpkins, photographing them, posting on social). You may not resell the PDF file itself.
What if my printer doesn't print the whole stencil?βΎ
Set 'Page scaling' to 'Fit' in the print dialog and uncheck 'Auto-rotate'. If it still cuts off, the design includes 0.25" of safe-area margin so a small crop won't ruin it.
How to carve this stencil
This is a cut-through stencil: the gray areas on the printable pattern are the pieces you remove, and everything white stays attached. The steps below give you the safest carving order. Plan on about 60-90 minutes from print to candle.
Set up first. Print the PDF at 100% scale on letter or A4 paper. Cut the lid at an angle, scoop the pumpkin clean, and thin the carving wall to about 1 inch where the design will sit. Tape the pattern on (snip small darts in the paper so it hugs the curve) and transfer every outline by poking dots along the lines, about one every 1/8 inch. Peel the paper away and carve dot to dot with short, straight strokes.
Carving order
- Cut the face details. Start with the smallest pieces: the notch pupils inside the white eyes, the little triangle nose, and the thin smile curve beneath it. A detail saw and light pressure keep these crisp.
- Cut the whisker area and toe marks. Remove the small shapes at the cat's feet and work carefully where the thin white whisker lines cross the gray; the whiskers must stay attached on both ends, so stop each cut exactly at their edges.
- Cut the tail spiral. Saw the curled spiral beside the body and the long thin tail sweep below it. Work the inner loop of the spiral slowly from both directions; it is the most fragile curve in the design.
- Cut the top arc. Remove the wide arc above the cat's head. Cut toward each pointed end from the middle so the tips near the ears stay sharp.
- Open the background ovals. Finish with the two large background sections on either side of the cat. Leave a tab on each, support the plug, and release them last so the white cat outline never carries the weight.
Clear loose fibers out of each opening as you go, and never twist or pry the blade against the shell; back it out and recut instead. When every piece is out, wipe the cut edges dry and drop in a battery LED puck.

Beginner-friendlyWaving Whiskers Pumpkin Stencil
A seated cat in full silhouette with one front paw playfully raised, pointed ears alert, and a long fluffy tail curling up beside its body. The entire cat is cut through as a single connected opening, so the whole figure glows warmly against the evening sky. An easy carve with one caution: the raised paw and tail tip are the narrowest sections, so cut them last with short gentle strokes.
Beginner-friendlyMoonlit Mouser Pumpkin Stencil
An upright cat sits in silhouette beneath a small crescent moon, just two cut-through openings on the whole pumpkin. The cat's ears, curved back, and tail all come out as a single piece, leaving the shell dark around two clean glowing shapes. Trace the cat's outline slowly in one continuous cut and push the piece out from inside the pumpkin for the cleanest edge.
Beginner-friendlyMidnight Whiskers Pumpkin Stencil
A seated cat in profile, ears pricked and long tail curling upward, cut entirely through so the whole silhouette becomes a window of warm light. The design has no interior details, which keeps it simple, but the slender curved tail asks for a little care. An easy carve overall; save the tail for last and support the wall with your free hand as you follow its curve so the tip stays intact.
Beginner-friendlyCurly the Kitten Pumpkin Stencil
A friendly cat face built from simple shapes: two pointed ears with inner triangles, big oval eyes, a tiny triangle nose, a curled smile, and three long whiskers sweeping out from each cheek. Every element is cut through, so the whole face lights up at once. The whiskers are just narrow slits, which is why kids can manage this one; poke each slit through with the tip of the saw and lengthen it slowly.
Beginner-friendlyTall Tabby Pumpkin Stencil
An upright cat face sized for taller pumpkins: leaf-shaped eyes, a small triangle nose, three long whisker slits on each cheek, pointed ears, and a smiling mouth with rounded teeth left in place. Every feature is a simple pierced cutout. Carve the skinny whisker slits with a fine blade before opening the larger eyes and mouth so the wall stays stiff while you work.
Beginner-friendlyButton-Eyed Kitty Pumpkin Stencil
A sweet cat face built from simple shapes: two triangle ears cut near the top, round eyes, a small triangle nose, and three thin whisker slits fanning out from each cheek. Everything is a cut-through, so the ears, eyes, and whiskers all glow at night. It is an easy carve overall; save the skinny whisker slits for last and use a narrow saw with short strokes so the slits stay crisp.
