One giant eye stares from this pumpkin, its almond outline cut clean through and the round iris left attached by a slim bridge to the upper lid. Our tips for carving a similar design

The whole design is one almond-shaped eye cut clean through, with a round iris left floating in the opening. The trick is a slim bridge of skin connecting the top of the iris to the upper lid, so the iris stays supported instead of falling out. Mark that bridge first, keep it wide enough to hold, and carve everything else around it.

From pumpkin to porch

  1. Transfer the eye outline

    Print or draw a large almond eye and tape it flat to the front of the pumpkin, snipping the paper edges so it hugs the curve. Poke the outline of the eye, the circle of the iris, and both edges of the connecting bridge with a pin or awl. Space the dots close together on the curves so you can read the shape once the paper comes off. This is a concept design, so plan on one clean eye that fills most of the front face.

  2. Open the lid and clean the wall

    An adult should cut a lid around the stem at an angle so it drops back in easily, then scoop the inside with a scoop tool. Thin the front wall where the eye will be down to about one inch so your saw moves smoothly and the light glows through. A thinner wall also makes the fine bridge easier to control. Save some scooped flesh in case you want to test cuts on a scrap piece.

  3. Score the bridge before anything else

    Find the slim bridge that links the top of the iris to the upper lid and mark both sides of it clearly. Make shallow scoring cuts along those two lines first so the bridge is defined before you remove any weight around it. Keep the bridge at least a quarter inch wide so it can hold the iris without snapping. Treat this strip as off-limits for the rest of the carving.

  4. Cut the iris circle

    Using a small carving saw, cut the round iris outline, working the blade away from the bridge on every stroke so the iris never takes downward pressure. Go slowly around the curve and let the saw do the work rather than forcing it. The iris should stay attached only at that top bridge when you finish. Support it gently with a finger from behind if it starts to feel loose.

  5. Cut the almond opening last

    Now saw the large almond outline of the eye, saving these big openings for the end when the pumpkin is still strong. Cut the two long lid curves and let the waste pieces drop inward, then lift them out. Work toward the bridge from each side and stop short of it so you never nick the strip holding the iris. Clean up any ragged edges with a paring cut for a crisp outline.

  6. Light it and photograph

    Set a battery LED tea light or puck inside and drop the lid back on, never use an open flame near thin bridges. In darkness the almond opening blazes bright while the iris reads as a dark circle floating in the glow. Shoot the photo at dusk from straight on so the eye stares back at the camera. If you carve a second one, place them on either side of the door for a matched pair of watchers.

Before you start cutting

How wide should the bridge to the iris be?

Aim for at least a quarter inch, and closer to three eighths if your pumpkin wall is thin or soft. A too-narrow strip will tear under the weight of the iris. Mark and score both edges of the bridge before you cut anything else so its width stays consistent.

Why does the iris look darker than the opening around it?

The iris is solid pumpkin wall, so it blocks most of the light and reads as a dark circle. The almond around it is cut clean through, so the LED shines straight out and looks brightest. That contrast is what makes the eye pop.

Can I keep the iris in place without a bridge?

Not with a single circle in an open cut, it would simply fall out. The bridge is the only thing supporting it, which is why you score and protect that strip first. If you want no bridge, peel the iris instead of cutting around it so it stays part of the wall.
